Gray Cook
Gray Cook is practicing physical therapist, a orthopedic certified specialist, a certified strength and conditioning specialist and an RKC kettlebell instructor. He is the founder of Functional Movement Systems, a company that promotes the concept of movement pattern screening and assessment. His work and ideas are at the forefront of fitness, conditioning, injury prevention and rehabilitation. You’ll find him lecturing on these topics several weekends each month, worldwide.

His career started with an undergraduate degree in sports medicine and exercise science, with minors in athletic training and psychology. His interest took him to the University of Miami, where he studied physical therapy and furthered his strength and conditioning development. Gray has introduced a systems approach to understanding, training and rehabilitating movement. He contends that we must map movement patterns and consider movement as a behavior and not simply as clean mechanical data. We must also develop better understanding of how movement is learned, maintained and restored. Gray’s work cuts to the core of problems like low back pain, obesity and the general physical decline of a modern culture. By revisiting the natural developmental principals that all infants employ as they learn to walk, run and climb, Gray forces us the rethink motor learning, corrective exercise and modern conditioning practices. Lee Burton, PhD, ATC, CSCS
Dr. Burton received his Bachelor Degree in Athletic Training from Appalachian State University and his Masters Degree in Education with an emphasis in athletic training from Old Dominion University. He received his Doctorate Degree from Virginia Tech with an emphasis in Health Promotion and Wellness, attained his Certification of Athletic Training through the National Athletic Trainer’s Association and his Certification of Strength and Conditioning through the NSCA. He has presented on numerous sports medicine topics, has authored book chapters and articles in a variety of sports medicine journals and has produced instructional videos covering functional applications for treatment, assessment and conditioning. Dr. Burton currently consults with a wide variety of organizations including the NFL, NHL, MLB, NBA, military and government entities, as well as the Cooper and Mayo Clinics on injury prevention and performance enhancement. He is the program director for Athletic Training at Averett University.

As an athletic training and health and fitness educator, it is extremely important to me that students and professionals in the healthcare profession have common language or principles which allow more effective communication. This text offers principles and techniques to provide a common foundation of improved discussions on how to address common movement dysfunctions.

Kyle Kiesel, PT, PhD, ATC, CSCS
Dr. Kiesel is an Associate Professor of Physical Therapy at the University of Evansville.  His areas of research include motor control of the core and functional movement testing.  Using ultrasound imagining and EMG, he has investigated how pain adversely affects motor control of the core and developed specific muscle tests used for patients with low back pain. Because of his long-standing interest in athletic performance, injury prediction and recovery, his research has also led to significant work related to functional movement screening, testing and assessment for athletes. He is currently a co-investigator on a 1.5 million-dollar grant to study functional movement risk factors related to injury in US military personnel. Dr. Kiesel is engaged in patient care in orthopedics and sports at ProRehab, PC in Evansville, Indiana, where he serves as Director of Evidence-Based Practice.

I am proud to be a contributor to the new book, Movement. Since our early days working to grow an outpatient sports medicine practice as we developed various aspects of the model, we sought to simply judge and, when needed, facilitate what we believed to be authentic movement. It has been a delicate balance of clinical intuition, experience and research… culminating in this book, which introduces the Functional Movement System. Application of The System invites exercise and healthcare professionals to work together to address the specific problems facing each individual interested in fitness, performance or musculoskeletal pain reduction through the common thread of authentic movement.

From the basics of breathing to the complex science of injury prediction, we aimed to provide the reader with a sound model from which to practice and grow, while remaining focused on movement. ~Kyle Kiesel

Greg Rose, DC
Greg Rose is a board certified Doctor of Chiropractic and holds an undergraduate degree in Engineering from the University of Maryland.  Greg specializes in 3-D biomechanics, strength and conditioning, manual therapy, rehabilitation, nutritional supplementation and therapeutic exercises specifically related to golf. His unique form of functional training combined with golf-specific motor learning drills has made him one of the top strength and conditioning coaches for golf in the United States.

Greg is the co-host of the Golf Fitness Academy seen weekly on the Golf Channel and is a co-founder of the Titleist Performance Institute in Oceanside, California. He is also a Certified Chiropractic Sports Practitioner and a Fellow in the International Academy of Clinical Acupuncture. Utilizing his background in engineering combined with his expertise on the human body, Greg has helped pioneer the field of analyzing computerized 3-Dimensional motion capture models of the golf swing. This research has helped golf professionals all over the world get a better understanding of how the body works during the golf swing.

Milo Bryant, CSCS, CPT, TPI-CGFI-III, USAW-SPC
Milo Bryant is a Long-Term Athletic Development (LTAD) specialist, personal trainer, fitness educator and fitness consultant based in San Diego, California. He is a member of the Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) Junior Advisory Board, is the director of the TPI Junior Performance Center in Del Mar, California, and travels the world teaching nuances of LTAD. Milo spent 15 years as a journalist before devoting his time to physical fitness and fitness education. Milo won numerous reporting and writing awards during his career—he was the Colorado Sports Columnist of the Year twice and was a multiple winner in the annual Associated Press Sports Editors writing contest. His explanatory feature on the drug testing of U.S Olympic athletes earned a first-place APSE award.
